The "Holle Bolle Gijs"

Um.... what?

No, my baby did not get hold of my keyboard. Those are real words.

Holle Bolle Gijs is a Dutch phrase that refers to a gluttonous or greedy character from Dutch folklore. The name roughly translates to "Hollow/Empty Round Gijs" in English. (Gijs is a Dutch name similar to the English name Guy.)

What's Gijs all about? He is known for always being hungry despite constantly eating.

But you know what made Gijs really famous? When the Efteling theme park in the Netherlands turned him into trash cans. And not just any trash cans, but talking trash cans.

Gijs constantly calls out to passersby "Paper hier!" ("Paper here!:) And after you "feed" him, he'll say "Dat's lekker" (That's delicious), or thank you in various different languages.

Thanks to Gijs eternal appetite and grateful messages, Efteling is the most immaculate theme park around. The kids there search for trash so they can feed the Holle Bolle Gijs.

Yes. Entertainment makes things more effective. And people love it.

Do you hear that? They WANT to be entertained. They want browsing your site to be more than just a shopping task checked off their list.

And it doesn't have to be that hard to make your site entertaining. A couple of phrases here or there, a theme or narrative that runs through the site, entertaining micro copy - these small touches can make all the difference. They can turn your site from boring into entertaining.

And entertainment makes shoppers happy, which makes them want to come back to you again and again.
