Thoughts on a Jewish rap artist

There’s a guy I follow, Ari Lesser. He calls himself a Spoken Word Artist - and he is that! His latest spoken art creation, aka Jewish rap song, appeared on my feed today. And it’s brilliant.

(Get that rap beat going in your head.)

“Chanukah just ain’t what it used to be

‘Cuz some Jews got jealous o’ the Christmas tree

Spent all their money on the shopping spree

Tryin' to be like the people they see on TV

Don’t let yourself forget history

Knowledge is key to set your mind free

Just open a book, look back and see

What it really meant to be a Maccabee

(A few paragraphs about Greek oppression and how the Maccabee’s defeated them.)

You see, they risked their lives to fight assimilation

But now Chanukah’s just a cheap imitation

Of some other foreign nation’s celebration

That falls on a similar calendar location…

You light the menorah, but you don’t study Torah

‘Cuz your running like Lot after Soddom and Gomorrah

No divine presence, presents from Walmart

So you still feel empty when you fill up your cart.”

Since I'm blessed with a marketer's brain :), I tend to find marketing inspiration in everything. Even Jewish rap songs.

Here are two lessons I pulled from Ari's song - and how they can help your brand.

Lesson 1: The power of rhythmic language

Our brains just love rhythm - it's like superglue for the brain. Every teacher knows this. Want kids to remember something? Turn it into a tune and they'll remember it forever. (I'm sure I'm not the only one who can still belt out history songs I learned in second grade.)

How you can use it in your marketing: Look at your website. What can you do to make the language more rhythmic? If you have a list of bullet points about your product - are the lines similar in length? Can you stick in a rhyme somewhere without sounding cheesy?

Read this excerpt from the About Page I wrote for Levov Watches:

Can you feel the rhythm? It's not a rhyme or anything obvious - but there's a cadence to the sentences that makes it pleasurable to read. And easier to remember.

Lesson 2: Change your delivery to reach new audiences

If Ari was dressed in a hat and suit, standing at a lectern, and giving a charismatic speech about the true meaning of Chanukah - he’d only attract the attention of those already interested in the message of Chanukah.

But because Ari’s got a hippie style ponytail, stands in random locations wearing casual clothes, and speaks in rap - he’s attracting the attention of young folks who’ve never considered Hanukkah as anything more than a time to party and get gifts.

How you can use it in your marketing: Think out of the box. Is there an audience that has not yet shown interest in your products - but you’re convinced that your product would be great for them?

Look at what interests them. What kind of social media posts do they love? What language do they use? What concepts speak to them?

Now gather all this info and create marketing materials that will speak to them. Even if it's totally different than anything you've ever done before.

And now, some giveaway news: I'll be choosing the lucky winner in the next hour! If you won - you'll get an email from me. Otherwise, look out for the announcement tomorrow.

If you joined for the giveaway, but didn't win - stick around! Lots of interesting, helpful content headed your way.
