Why do the storks no longer come?

It was Lina, one of the six schoolchildren who first asked the question, and she set the others to wondering. Why do the storks no longer come to the little Dutch fishing village of Shora to nest?

That's the premise of one of my favorite books as a kid, a real old-school novel - The Wheel on the School by Meindert DeJong.

Over in the nearby village of Nes, two big storks came to build their nest right on the roof of Lina's aunt's house. Yet storks never, ever came to land in Shora.

Why not? Lina begins to investigate. First, Lina notices that all the houses in Shora have sharp roofs, while her aunt in Nes has a wheel on her roof that provides a perfect, flat nest-building surface.

Then she starts talking to her elderly neighbor, Grandmother Sibble, who points out that her aunt also has trees around her house.

'Would a stork think about trees?’ the old lady wanted to know. 'It seems to me a stork would think about trees. And it seems to me that in order to figure out what a stork would want, we should try to think the way a stork would think.’

Grandmother Sibble goes on to explain how there used to be trees in Shora, and the storks would nest in those trees. As Grandmother Sibble so eloquently put it,

'You see, if I were a stork, even if I had my nest on a roof, I think I would still like to hide myself in a tree now and then and settle down in the shade and rest my long legs. Not be on the bare peak of a roof for everybody to see me all the time.'

But a horrible storm uprooted all the trees in Shora. And then she says:

'So you see you mustn't think our sharp roofs is the whole story, must you...We must think about other things, too. Like our lack of trees, our storms, our salt spray. We must think about everything. And to think it right, we must try to think the way a stork would think !'

And that is the key to marketing, really.

If you aren't pulling in enough sales, you need to think like a stork. You need to try to isolate not just one, but all the elements that might make your site seem unattractive to your prospective customers.

Is it the headline? Is it the UX? Is it the general vibe?

And that is what Power Up is all about. Isolating the components of your product page, landing page, or home page that are making that page feel inhospitable and unattractive to potential customers.

The stork settled on the wheel and closed his eyes,
